Refugees arriving in Canada may have experienced war, violence, harsh living conditions, separation from family, or other forms of trauma. Settling into a new and foreign country is very difficult to begin with, and living with traumatic past experiences can make that even more challenging. Newcomers may experience a variety of mental health challenges during their resettlement such as:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Stress
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Settlement agencies and PSR groups can help connect refugees to mental health services in their area. In the Kingston area, the following mental health and counselling services may be accessed by refugees:

How to access services?
Pathways for Children & Youth has a centralized intake service. Anyone may enquire about our agency services or make a referral by calling intake. Referrals directly from parents and guardians, and from youth over the age of 12, are encouraged. Other family members, service providers (e.g. physicians, school personnel, lawyers or community agency staff) or any concerned person may refer on a family’s behalf provided the family or youth is aware of and agrees to the request for services. You do not necessarily need to have a ‘problem’ to use our services; you may just need some parenting support or guidance.
What does it cost?
Pathways for Children & Youth is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services and there is no cost; some specialized counselling/services may require OHIP coverage.
