Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities | Family Medicine | School of Medicine

The PGY3 Enhanced Skills program in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Medicine at Queen's is the only national residency program focused on IDD. The flexible six- to 12-month program provides residents with extensive clinical opportunities to gain the confidence and competence to manage complex IDD-related physical and mental health issues. The program also focuses on both the ethical and the communication challenges with this population.

A core four-month rotation incorporates clinical experiences with family physicians who provide consultations in this field, as well as specialty clinics with psychiatry, genetics, neurology, and physical and rehabilitation medicine. Clinical elective experiences across Ontario and Canada are also available. The resident also provides primary care to group home residents locally during their core block, which guarantees an excellent continuity of care experience! Research projects are encouraged, and supervisors with a variety of interests in the IDD field are available.
