The war in Ukraine has now been raging for over a month, with massive displacements of civilians and substantial conflict and bombardment of cities and towns. Across Canada and here locally, medical organizations ranging from large national coalitions like the Canadian Medical Forum (which includes our own national college) to our local hospital medical advisory committees and SEAMO have come forward to call for an end to the war.

I am sitting writing this after the events of this morning have overshadowed the reflections I had prepared earlier. After viewing Dr. Aisha Lofters’ opening keynote for Primary Care Research Day 2022, I glanced at the news to find that open, large-scale war returned to Europe today for the first time since the Second World War.

As we enter a new year, there is renewed attention on the critical importance of access to comprehensive team-based primary care for all. The critical health human resource shortages that cross disciplines and involve family physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals have been brought to the forefront during this most recent Omicron-driven wave of COVID-19. In every profession, there is more demand for health-care workers than there are people to respond.

Fall is well underway and around the world there are holidays that recognize the hard work of the spring and summer that give thanks for a bountiful harvest. Here in the DFM, it also offers a chance to recognize that over the past year-and-a-half our staff, learners, and faculty have stepped up to meet the unique challenges of the pandemic and, more recently, the heightened demand for services as we work towards recovery.
