This will be my final post as my term as department head comes to an end and I move on to a year’s administrative leave to take on the role of president of the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
I’m writing from the WONCA World Conference in Sydney, Australia, where I am hearing the similarities in the challenges our fellow family physicians from around the world are facing, and our shared understanding of the solutions.
This month’s QFM Monitor highlights some of these solutions — team-based care, regional networks to integrate care, high-quality training in family medicine, and information systems and research to understand what works. Underpinning all of this is a clear understanding of the value family medicine brings to our communities, health systems, and countries.
I am privileged to have had the opportunity to provide leadership to the incredible group of faculty, staff, and learners here in our department. There have been many transitions over my term with significant numbers of retirements, the recruitment of new faculty, and the identification of new leaders in research, education, and clinical programs over the years. Our hospitalist and addictions programs are welcome additions to the department, and we have worked hard to make it possible for faculty to take on leadership roles regardless of their location.
And, of course, there was COVID. You all stepped up to help get your communities, the department, and each other through these very challenging years. I know my successor will be announced soon and I hope you will provide them the same support and encouragement that I have enjoyed.
For my final sign-off I want to close with a big thanks to all of you and an important reminder that YOU make the department the success it is.
WE are Family Medicine. For Learners. For Patients. For Communities.
