Global Health

The Department of Family Medicine (DFM) at Queen’s University has been engaged in global health activities for several decades. As an example, many of our faculty were involved for fifteen years in the Queen's University Family Medicine Development Program in Bosnia and Herzegovina leading the reform of their primary health-care system following the war in the Balkans. More recently, our faculty have been instrumental in establishing training experiences for our residents in the Falkland Islands.

Over the past several years, DFM has consolidated and expanded its Global Health curriculum with the development of a Global Health Enhanced Skills Program and the global health seminar series. The Global Health Program's revised vision and mission reflects the inclusive nature of global health, placing greater emphasis on developing community partnerships, providing educational supports, and fostering patient advocates, roles necessary within the broader global health community.

These changes align with the DFM’s renewed direction, namely to “be recognized as opinion leaders and valued partners, advancing the discipline of family medicine and health-care systems locally, regionally, nationally and internationally” and to “be dedicated to social responsibilities and service, acting as advocates, not only for our patients, but to champion issues that affect health, so as to improve society and better care for vulnerable and underserved populations, locally and abroad.”
