Public Health Training

PGY4 & PGY5 (PHPM Consolidation):

The final two years of your PHPM residency will consist of core and elective placements in Public Health and Preventive Medicine.  Core PHPM training sites include:

You will complete at least 18 months of public health placements, including 18 blocks of core placements in communicable disease, environmental health, public health policy and planning, health promotion and disease prevention, and public health management and administration. These placements will involve increasing levels of responsibility so by the end of your final core rotation, you are functioning in the role of an Associate Medical Officer of Health.

Rotations have been developed to meet your educational needs and interests. For core training sites in Ontario, Queen's University provides accommodation and travel allowances for residents who are completing rotations outside the Kingston area. Financial support for accommodation or travel is not available for electives.

The remainder of your time will be for elective placements. Some residents will use elective time to complete the requirements for a Master's degree. For example, the MPH practicum and additional course work will take up the first half of PGY4.

Electives and core placements can be completed with PHPM bodies and authorities at the local, provincial, national or international levels. We will work with you to secure placements that meet your personal and professional interests and needs.
